When the mind has put off the old self and shall put on the one born of grace, then it will see its own state in the time of prayer resembling sapphire or the color of heaven; this state scripture calls the place of God that was seen by the elders on Mount Sinai.

About Blue Sapphire Books

Blue Sapphire Books is a small, independent press dedicated to publishing contemporary voices in sacred literature. Founded by Beverly Lanzetta, and formed by a collaborative team of professionals working to fulfill its mission, Blue Sapphire Books brings emerging traditions of contemplation—interspiritual, interfaith, new monastic—into the public forum, and to readers interested in thoughtful theological reflection and deepening spiritual practice. It is our hope that Blue Sapphire publications will contribute to an inner transformation of self and society and a furthering of one’s devotion to the holy light.

Among our projects, we are working to bring into print Beverly Lanzetta’s unpublished works.

The image of the blue sapphire appears in Exodus 24:10, and later in the writing of a fourth century Christian monk, Evagrius of Pontus, to describe the pure state of the mind transformed by prayer and contemplative practice. It is through the sapphire blue light of the mind that one comes to the place of God, in an endless, imageless intimacy with all of creation.
